Au Bonheur Des Dames (1930)

Format:   DVD

Based on the Emile Zola novel, this stellar French melodrama follows an orphan girl (Dita Parlo) who arrives in Paris intent on a job at her uncle's fabric shop. When she instead accepts employment at the department store across the street, it appears to be a terrible betrayal since the larger operation is striving to shutter her uncle's smaller establishment. Rich with visual invention, the film co-stars Ginette Maddie, Madame Barsac; with English, French, or German intertitles. 89 min. Standard; Soundtrack: music score; bonus short. Silent with music score.
