The Busby Berkeley 9-Film Collection
"Varsity Show" (1937), a charming musical with choreography by Busby Berkeley, tells the story of college students hoping to put on a swing dance show despite the ban put in place by a persnickety professor. The kids get help from Broadway producer Dick Powell--because the show must go on! Johnnie Davis, Rosemary Lane co-star. Songs include "I'm Dependable," "Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag and Smile, Smile, Smile," and more. And, highlighted by musical sequences directed by Berkeley, "Gold Diggers In Paris" (1938) follows the owners and dancers from a cash-strapped New York City club as they are mistaken for members of a prestigious ballet group and invited to perform in Paris. Not wanting to turn down a free trip, the hoofers pose as classically trained performers while trying to step up their skills. Rudy Vallee, Lane also star. Includes the songs "The Latin Quarter," "Put That Down in Writing," and more. Ten-disc boxed set includes "42nd Street," "Gold Diggers Of 1933," "Footlight Parade," "Dames," "Gold Diggers Of 1935," "Gold Diggers Of 1937," "Hollywood Hotel," and "The Busby Berkeley Disc," a toe-tapping compilation of 21 of the choreographer/filmmaker's greatest dance numbers.
