This award-winning series helps students to build confidence in their ability to "do math" and develop the knowledge and skills required to become mathematically literate. The creation (or discovery) of decimal place values is discussed starting with the creation of the concept of zero. Decimal place values are investigated and a method for comparing decimal fractions is determined. The method for adding and subtracting decimals is related to adding and subtracting whole numbers and fractions, including the need for a common denominator. The importance of decimal addition and subtraction is highlighted in a discussion of maintaining a checking account register. Students will learn to define the location of the decimal point and to compare decimal fractions, while leaning to add and subtract decimal numbers.
