Charles Laughton won an Oscar for playing England's most-married monarch in "The Private Life of Henry VIII" (1933); Elsa Lanchester plays royal wife Anne of Cleves, and Merle Oberon is Anne Boleyn. With Robert Donat, Binnie Barnes; directed by Alexander Korda. Elisabeth Bergner plays the title role in Korda's lavish opus "The Rise of Catherine the Great" (1934), which follows her stormy marriage to crazed Czar Peter III and how, after his death, she ascends to the throne and helps make 18th-century Russia a world power. Middle-aged Don Juan (Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., in his last film) returns to Seville to find an impostor leading "The Private Life of Don Juan" (1934). Korda's film co-stars Oberon, Benita Hume. Laughton paints an unforgettable portrait in the biodrama of 17th-century Dutch artist "Rembrandt" (1936), focusing on his later years and the depression he suffered after the death of his wife.
