This two-disc set features two films by Russian director Larisa Shepitko, whose promising career was tragically cut short when she was killed in a car accident in 1979. First, a female fighter pilot (Maya Bulgakova) trades in her "Wings" (1966) to become a headmistress after World War II. Despite a new job carrying far fewer dangers, she finds adjusting to non-military life even more challenging. Sergei Nikonenko, Zhanna Bolatova also star. Shepitko's final film, "The Ascent" (1977), is set during World War II and follows two Soviet soldiers who are separated from their unit and forced to evade the Nazis while traveling through the snow-covered terrain of Belarus.
