In 1996, Jewish-American historian Deborah Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) was named to a libel suit in British court by English author/Holocaust denier David Irving (Timothy Spall) for having denigrated his theories in print. Saddled with the burden of proof to establish the veracity of the Third Reich’s atrocities, she--along with solicitor Anthony Julius (Andrew Scott) and barrister Richard Rampton (Tom Wilkinson)--had a delicate but hard-fought battle to deny legal legitimacy to Irving’s contentions.
