One of Gene's first features, "The Singing Vagabond" (1935) finds him playing a Cavalry captain who, along with trusted sidekick Frog (Smiley Burnette), escorts a wagonload of showgirls across the frontier. One of Gene's charges, though, is really an heiress (Ann Rutherford) whom Autry must rescue on more than one occasion. Also, Gene thought he had his hands full letting a pal (Frank Darien) is the owner of Autry's ranch to impress the man's visiting daughter, but things really take off when crooks try to steal the land to siphon off helium gas lying underground. "Western Jamboree" (1938) co-stars Jean Rouverol, Joe Frisco, and Burnette. Two-disc set also includes "Oh, Susanna!" and "Rootin' Tootin' Rhythm." 6 3/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
