The foul and fair take center stage in Verdi's "Macbeth" (1972), which features Kostas Paskalis as the tragic Thane of Cawdor; Josephine Barstow, Keith Erwin co-star. Next, Monteverdi's "Il Ritorno D'Ulisse in Patria" (1973) includes Benjamin Luxon, Janet Baker, and Anne Howells in its stellar ensemble. The devil finds some work to do in "The Rake's Progress" (1975), a memorable staging of the Stravinsky classic starring Felicity Lott and Samuel Ramey. Then, Shakespeare's "Falstaff" (1976) returns with a production featuring Donald Gramm as the corpulent knight.
