In the 1860s, a young, aspiring Russian wordsmith (Gregory Peck) becomes infatuated with a sophisticate (Ava Gardner) he encounters during a train trip. He follows her to Monte Carlo, to discover that the crippling gambling habit of her father (Walter Huston) has made her the marker for the casino's corrupt owner (Melvyn Douglas).
