When I started to look for a third silent film to score my only criteria was, having already done films in the War (Battleship Potemkin) and Horror (Nosferatu) genres, I wanted to find a new niche in which to work. Comedy and science fiction came to mind, but I opted to settle on the action/adventure genre, strangely, because I want to do a piece with more of a percussive element. It was not long after, that I spotted the original Tarzan of the Apes (TOTA) needing a musical makeover and so the stage was set. However, locating Tarzan of the Apes took a bit longer than you might think, partly because TOTA is a mostly forgotten, (meaning intentionally overlooked) movie. That's right. The very first Tarzan movie that led to an incredible run of successful (and not so successful) films, radio programs and television series as late as the 1970s. It seems the original 10-reel version was too long for the critic's taste and so TOTA officially became an "8-reeler" and 20 minutes or so have been lost to posterity. Further, there no great preservation or restoration efforts planned and it seems unlikely there will be any meaningful resurgence in interest anytime soon.
