Andrzej Wajda's first color film is set in 1939 Poland, where a majestic, white Arabian mare named Lotna ("swift one") serves a valiant cavalry captain (Jerzy Pichelski) defending a country ravaged by war. After the captain is killed in action, the horse so coveted by the other officers is passed along through their ranks as the ragtag squadron battles the invading German army.
