'The pope of power pop (or should we just call him the 'power pope'?) is back with another collection of top-drawer tracks, but this time with a twist. Not only has he taken the world of independent power pop by storm, but now his creative energies have been turned towards independent film as he's on the verge of releasing 'Giant Monster Playset', a short film he wrote and directed. Monster Suit is the soundtrack to the short film, but it's not a collection of incidental music with a few songs scattered among it. Instead, it's a full-length disc that stands on it's own and fits right in with his previous releases. There's a lot to like here, from the heavy, cascading guitar rock of 'Modern Plaything' to the melodic pop of 'Soulless Heart' to the anthemic 'Hero'. The acoustically-strummed 'The Chance You Don't Take' harkens back to Pope's Edmund's Crown days, and 'Place on the Hill' sounds like a lost classic rock gem. Pope's been on quite the creative run the last few years, and we're all enjoying the ride.' -AbsolutePowerpop.com 'One of my favorite power pop artists, Greg Pope puts on his Monster Suit for Halloween. We mentioned before that he is making a (short) film called Giant Monster Playset. This is the soundtrack album, and in typical Greg Pope fashion - it's got a pile of great songs. The faux Hendrix opener "Modern Plaything" gives way to a Soundgarden styled wall of dense guitars. A bit more impressive is the soft vocal of "Soulless Heart" that leads us to a strong hook in the chorus. "The Chance You Don't Take" is another gem with guitar strum and double tracked vocal. Some nice guitar work is part of the long intro on "Place On The Hill" and it's  comparable with The Who's Tommy. The 70's band Free is another point of reference on "The Last Time" as the slow march builds up to a satisfying crescendo. Some of the tracks are just wonderfully atmospheric like the instrumentals "There May Be Thousands" and "Monster Chase." The crashing cymbals on "This Is Goodbye" makes this mid-tempo love song bounces along it's warm melody a la Badfinger . . . any Greg Pope album is a worthy investment and will satisfy your craving for crunchy guitar pop. Can't wait for the film!' -Powerpopaholic.com All songs composed, performed and produced by Greg Pope. Mastered by Doug Diamond at Diamonddisc Audio.
