This award-winning series helps students to build confidence in their ability to "do math" and develop the knowledge and skills required to become mathematically literate. This lesson has three objectives. The first is to develop the process for multiplying decimal numbers. This is done based on the student's knowledge of the multiplication of whole numbers and fractions. We discuss the importance of getting a reasonable answer to a multiplication problem. The last two objectives involve the division of decimal numbers. First the lesson develops the method for decimal division based on understanding the division process. Then the rounding off of an answer is discussed, and this process is related to the real world through examples. Students will learn to multiply and divide numbers, while being able to check the answer to a decimal division problem and divide and round off to a specific place value.
