Ingmar Bergman's first screenplay explores the "Torment" (1944) of the relationship between a young student, his sadistic teacher, and the girl with whom they're both involved. Alf Sjoberg directs; Mai Zetterling, Gunnar Bjornstrand star. Bergman makes his directorial debut with "Crisis" (1946), the story of a girl who leaves her bucolic hometown to explore humanity's darker sides. Inga Landgre, Marianne Lofgren star. "Port Of Call" (1948) is a moving study of a sailor and a dance hall girl who is haunted by her unhappy past; with Nine-Christine Jonsson, Bengt Eklund. "Thirst" (1949) follows the rail journey of a couple whose marriage has become as barren as the post-WWII German countryside. Eva Henning, Birger Malmsten star. AKA: "Three Strange Loves." Finally, a violinist tries to resume his life after his wife's death in the heartfelt "To Joy" (1950), starring Maj-Britt Nilsson and Stig Olin. 8 hrs. total on five discs.
