Two film versions of Victor Hugo's timeless tale are featured. First, Fredric March stars as Jean Valjean, the petty thief in 18th-century France who escapes jail and begins a new life, and Charles Laughton is the unfeeling and unceasing Inspector Javert. Also stars Cedric Hardwicke, Rochelle Hudson. Then, Michael Rennie takes over the role of Valjean, with Robert Newton as his implacable pursuer and Debra Paget as Valjean's ward Cosette, in director Lewis Milestone's 1952 production. Edmund Gwenn, Sylvia Sidney also star. 3 1/2 hrs. total.
