After a drunken bender, a high-profile attorney (Ian Hunter) wakes up to discover he's married to a down-on-her-luck shopgirl (Bette Davis) who had been paid $100 to keep him out of trouble. Despite their many differences, the unlikely couple tries to make their marriage work. But Davis finds she'll have to fight for her man when his high-society fiancee (Katharine Alexander) decides she wants him back.
