East Germany's DEFA film studio tried to cash in on the U.S./Soviet space race with these intriguing sci-fi efforts. A meteorite found in the Gobi Desert contains the first contact from Venus, but an international space expedition sent to the planetary neighbor discovers the shocking truth behind the message, in "The Silent Star" (1960), based on a Stanislaw Lem novel and re-edited for the U.S. as "First Spaceship on Venus." Next, starships vanish and a space station goes silent after a mysterious one-word message from the heart of the galaxy is received, in the eerie "Eolomea" (1972). And when Earth space cruiser Cyrno responds to a distress call from the alien world TEM 4, the crew is hardly ready for the strange goings-on beneath the planet's surface, in "In the Dust of the Stars" (1976). 4 1/2 hrs. total. In German with English subtitles. Three-disc set.
