Director/co-scripter Jules Dassin's racially charged revamping of the John Ford drama "The Informer" moves the story from 1920s Dublin to the Cleveland ghetto in the wake of Martin Luther King's 1968 assassination (which occurred during filming). As riots tear the city apart, a jobless steelworker (Julian Mayfield) turns a militant friend (Max Julien) in to the police for a $1,000 reward, then must deal with the consequences of his actions.
