Burt Reynolds is the Jewish owner of a small Washington, D.C., grocery store who is shot by a young boy during a hold-up. Reynolds and the boy are taken by the boy's mother, a cabbie, to a small Louisiana town where she seeks refuge with her family. But the woman's family has its share of problems, and Reynolds soon teaches her how to get over the problems that haunt her from the past.
