George Washington (Criterion Collection) (2000)
Impressive debut from filmmaker David Gordon Green is a lyrical, highly praised drama set in a small, rundown North Carolina town around Independence Day, where a multi-racial group of children finds its own moral code. Nasia dumps boyfriend Buddy to go out with George, a quiet boy with a handicap that forces him to wear a football helmet. Nasia sees George as a boy with great potential, and, after a series of dramatic events, he proves himself in a heroic action. Candace Evanofski, Donald Holden and Curtis Cotton III head the mostly non-professional cast. 89 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; deleted scene; bonus shorts; interviews; theatrical trailer.
