Country (1984)/A Thousand Acres (1997)/Paradise (1991)
Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard play farmers at odds with government officials who wish to close down their family farm, in "Country." Fine performances and a timely, heartfelt battle against big business highlight this rousing drama. Wilford Brimley also stars. Then, "King Lear" is transplanted to the American heartland in "A Thousand Acres," based on Jane Smiley's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Jason Robards stars as a hard-hearted farmer whose plans to divide his spread between daughters Lange, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jennifer Jason Leigh lead to jealousy, conspiracy, and the digging-up of some long-buried family skeletons. And finally, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson star in "Paradise," playing a dispassionate couple whose lives were shattered when their young son died. They attempt to heal their marriage by caring for a friend's 10-year-old son (Elijah Wood) who's come to spend the summer with them. Thora Birch co-stars. 5 1/3 hrs. total on two discs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English.
