Director/co-scripter Bernard Rose transplants Leo Tolstoy's novella to contemporary Los Angeles in this emotionally charged melodrama. A classical pianist's (Elisabeth Rohm) affair with a wealthy older man (Danny Huston) leads to marriage and her retirement from performing. Years later, however, a benefit concert causes old jealousies to resurface, as Huston becomes convinced Rohm is cheating on him with a handsome violinist (Matthew Yang King).
