Alan Ladd stars as a commercial artist who leaves New York to start a new life as a painter in a small town in Connecticut, much to the dismay of his mentally unbalanced, alcoholic wife (Carolyn Jones). When she suddenly disappears and leaves all of his paintings slashed, Ladd is wrongly accused of murdering her and must go on the run to prove his innocence.
