German filmmaker Volker Schlondorff ("The Tin Drum") continues his cinematic exploration of the banality of evil with this compelling drama. Simple-minded French mechanic John Malkovich, falsely accused of molesting children, avoids prison by joining the army at the start of World War II. Captured by the Germans, Malkovich is drawn into the Nazi cause and becomes a recruiter of boys for a Hitler Youth camp. Volker Spengler, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Marianne Sagebrecht also star. 127 min.
