An orphaned Irish lad (Dean Stockwell) is sent to Scotland to be raised in his grandparents' home. As he grows to be a young man (Tom Drake), he seeks to obtain a scholarship, with the help of his indulgent great-grandfather (Charles Coburn) and in spite of his flinty grandfather (Hume Cronyn). Beautifully realized adaptation of the A.J. Cronin novel co-stars Gladys Cooper, Jessica Tandy, Norman Lloyd, Selena Royle. 125 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
