In 1930s Washington, D.C., a young American woman (Carroll Baker) is--over her family's objections--wooed and won by a Japanese diplomat (James Shigeta). With the advent of Pearl Harbor, the couple and their young daughter are swapped to Japan in exchange for U.S. envoys, and they find themselves facing hostility for his longtime pacifistic stance and her heritage.
