In the midst of World War II, a military lawyer (Robert Mitchum) must determine if a young American officer (Keenan Wynn) is mentally fit for trial after he murders a British soldier. As tensions rise between the British and U.S. forces, Mitchum's investigation is hampered by his commanding officer, who pressures him to close the case quickly and quietly.
