E.W. Hornung's dapper gentleman thief is the subject of these two silent crime dramas. First the legendary John Barrymore is "Raffles, The Amateur Cracksman" (1917). Returning to England in search of rich and easy targets, Barrymore finds his liberty imperiled by a woman whom he "relieved" of a valuable pearl years earlier. Christine Mayo, Frank Morgan also star. Then, House Peters takes over the lead role in director King Baggot's remake, "Raffles" (1925), co-starring Hedda Hopper, Miss DuPont, and Freeman Wood. 120 min. total. Standard; Soundtrack: music score. Silent with music score.
