Within Our Gates (1920)
A shocker when first released, this groundbreaking Oscar Micheaux film is the earliest surviving feature from an African-American director. The story concerns a black woman who attempts to finance a school for Southern children by raising money in the North. The film's depictions of lynchings and rape are still disturbing today. Evelyn Preer and Flo Clements star. 78 min. Standard; Soundtrack: music score. Silent with music score.
