East Germany's first science-fiction effort from its DEFA Film Studio was made to capitalize on the U.S./Soviet "space race." In the Gobi Desert, debris from a fallen meteor turns out to contain the first contact from the planet Venus. A multinational space expedition launches towards "the silent planet," only to decipher the message's shocking contents: a declaration of war on Earth! Based on Stanislaw Lem's novel "The Astronauts," this sci-fi classic--re-edited for its U.S. release as "First Spaceship on Venus"--is at last available in its original version. 95 min.
