The Shoe (1998)
Writer/director Laila Pakalnina's wry fairy tale is set in Latvia during the late 1950s, when the country was still part of the Soviet Union. Patrolling the white, sandy beaches, Soviet patrolmen find a woman's shoe and footprints approaching the nearby village of Liepaja. Convinced the shoe belongs to a woman who has sneaked across the border from the sea, the troops begin knocking on every door in the quaint town, searching (in a twisted take on the "Cinderella" tale) for the lady the shoe fits. Igors Buraks, Vadims Grossmans and Vilke Liman star. 78 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: Latvian; Subtitles: English. In Latvian with English subtitles.
