The Overture (Hom Rong) (2004)
Format:
As a child in late 19th-century Thailand, Sorn (Anuchit Sapanpong) is eager to use his musical gifts to play in competitions, but is forbidden to play the ranard-ek--the traditional Thai wooden xylophone--after rivals murder his older brother. In a parallel narrative, the elderly Sorn (Adul Dulyarat) resists the Thai government's attempts to ban the use of the instrument, and other Thai traditions, following World War II. Based on the life of musician Luang Pradith Phairao, this lush and lyrical drama also stars Sumeth Ong-Ard and Phoovarit Phumpuang. 104 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: Thai; Subtitles: English; theatrical trailer. In Thai with English subtitles.
