Beethoven, Chopin, Prokofiev, and so many others represent the great tradition of the composer-pianist. But during the 20th century this practice began to die off. It was replaced by academic music which never gained or sought a real audience. Composer-pianist Nathan Shirley has broken with the academic music world, and seeks to pick up where the greats left off. This DVD is a companion film to the 2011 album While Good Folk Sleep and was filmed during the March 6th recording session. It also includes music not heard on the CD, along with an independently produced music video by Old Red Beak Productions. Each of the many diverse performances is captured by stunning cinematography rarely seen on classical DVDs. The music was composed over a ten year period beginning with 'Toccata' written at age 20.
