Tibetan filmmaker Pema Tseden's haunting allegorical drama is set in a remote, impoverished region of western China. The ne'er-do-well son of an elderly Tibetan shepherd attempts to sell his father's beloved nomad mastiff hound, a breed sought after as pets by wealthy Chinese families, before it's stolen by black marketeers, but his efforts to "help" the family lead to conflict.
