'...To whirl audibly through air.' At first glance, just a dictionary definition of the verb 'swish'. However, ear-to-the-street live poetry crowds will testify that it's also a good description of the stir created by the brand of poetry that Richard Smartt Jr. is writing and performing around the UK. '[verb]swish' then, is a fitting moniker for the South Londoner who is not only cutting through the traditional veneer of rhyme but infiltrating, with draught like efficiency, doors historically closed to spoken word poetry. It was only in April of 2005 that his cinematic style of poetry was selected for multi-screening in London's Trafalgar Square to crowds of 10,000+ during the open-air FLYA festival 2005. Remarkably the year before this he was just visiting open mics in London buzzing poetry scene. Fast forward eighteen months to summer of 2006 and the release of his EP scored. Words. In.spoken. Harmony vol.1 was launched at The Roundhouse in Camden, London's historic and newly reopened performing arts venue. That swish is the first spoken word artist to play the venue with live band, speaks volumes about the trail he is blazing in his approach to spoken word; an approach that moves from conversational satire about diva unicorns to observations about Truth in the classical sense, openly sharing his Christian faith with accapella like the controversial 'J-word'. The time between open mic sojourning to major venue performance was marked by bookings amongst international acts at The Out of Africa Festival, The Bringing the House Down Festival, Patrick Neate's Book Slam @ Cherry Jam plus a slew of other live dates. As an educator, his Visiting Tutor appointments at the Duke of Edinburgh Award and England's prestigious National Youth Theatre soon followed. Himself, a music fanatic, [verb]swish's debut is motivated by a strong desire to write uncompromising literature that music lovers can feel. Coming to prominence as a songwriter then is perhaps a natural outworking; with [verb]swish the only lyric contributor on the project, penning poetry verse and song choruses for stellar vocalists Taylor Lane and Sister Jones. With familiar gusto he is ventilating the live spoken word scene with acoustic guitar and Backing vocalists in tow -"Part of the s.w.i.s.h ethic has been 'Seek.Whatever's.Instrumental... Start Harmonizing!' says swish. The same can be said about his strong rapport with producer and composer heavyweight Gavin 'Hollerzz' Holligan, who is producing the forthcoming Arts Council sponsored LP - s.w.i.s.h vol. 2 due out next year. Scored, soulful neo-poetry has a new sound, that can't be kept quiet.... swishhhhhh.
