Behind the running of Journey Brown, Noah Cain, and Ricky Slade, the 10th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions (11-2) defeated the 17th ranked Memphis Tigers (12-2) in the 2019 Cotton Bowl Classic, 53-39. Brown led all rushers with 202 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Penn State ran for a season-high 396 yards on 53 attempts. Nittany Lions' linebacker Micah Parsons took game MVP honors. Parsons recorded 14 tackles, tying his season best. "We played a lot of snaps out there today," Parsons said after the game. "It was pretty hectic." Memphis placekicker Riley Patterson set a Cotton Bowl record, and an overall all-time bowl record, with six field goals. Tigers quarterback Brady White completed 32 of 51 passes for 454 yards. In his post-game comments, Penn State head coach, James Franklin said there (may not have been) a whole lot of expectations (for his team) coming into this season, but "we're a young team (that) has "laid a foundation for our future and we'll have a lot of momentum going into next season."
