Fame (1980)
Gritty urban reality blends with vibrant song-and-dance numbers in Alan Parker's Oscar-winning musical-drama set in New York's High School for the Performing Arts. Follow the personal and academic struggles of the aspiring musicians, actors, comedians, and dancers who populate the school, hoping it will be the first step on the road to success. Irene Cara, Lee Curreri, Barry Miller, Maureen Teefy, and Anne Meara star. Songs include the title tune, "Hot Lunch Jam," "I Sing the Body Electric." 134 min. C/Rtg: R
Risky Business (1983)
Chicago teen Tom Cruise's parents leave the house and the car in his care while they go on vacation, leading him to do what any red-blooded American boy might be tempted to do: take the Porsche for a spin, throw a wild party, and hook up with a warm-hearted prostitute (Rebecca De Mornay) who gives him a crash course in capitalism. Sharp, erotic comedy/drama that made Cruise an instant star. With Curtis Armstrong, Bronson Pinchot, and Joe Pantoliano as "Guido, the killer pimp." 99 min. C/Rtg: R
The Outsiders (1983)
Set in 1960s Oklahoma, Francis Ford Coppola's exciting adaptation of the classic S.E. Hinton tale chronicles a bitter gang war between the working-class "greasers" and the upscale "socs." When a violent encounter results in the death of a rival gang member, greasers C. Thomas Howell and Ralph Macchio must go on the run from the law, forcing them to grow up before their time. The supporting cast features a host of future stars, including Diane Lane, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, and Tom Cruise. 91 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
Police Academy (1984)
An outrageously funny look at a group of misfits who sign up for training as lawmen at a place where the cops are so inept, crime's gotta pay! A riotous beat you won't want to miss! Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall, Bubba Smith, George Gaynes, and Michael Winslow star; directed by Hugh Wilson. 96 min. C/Rtg: R
Spies Like Us (1985)
Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd star in director John Landis' tribute to Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's "Road" movies. When two elite agents are needed for a top-secret mission, Emmett Fitz-Hume (Chase) and Austin Millbarge (Aykroyd) are on the bottom of the list. Originally sent to act as decoys while a more qualified team carries out the assignment, the bumbling spies somehow wind up trying to foil a group of international missile maniacs. With Donna Dixon, Steve Forrest, Bruce Davison. 103 min. C/Rtg: PG
Standard/Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English; Subtitles: English (SDH), French; audio commentary; documentary; theatrical trailers; featurettes; more.
