An old Russian woman (Galina Vishnevskaya) boards a train en route to a military base in Chechnya, where she hopes to be reunited with her grandson, an army captain. She greets her grandson's disheveled appearance with some dissatisfaction, proceeding to make her unforgettable presence known around the base, winning both friends and enemies.
