A war photographer travels to a remote region of the Peruvian Andes where her husband, an eye doctor, met a violent end after he and other physicians were attacked by villagers who thought them responsible for illnesses caused by the local silver mines. The grieving widow soon discovers her personal journey to be intimately linked to one of the women whose fiancée was stricken by mercury poisoning.
