After 20,000 immigrant laborers walked off the job at New York City's garment sweatshops in late 1909, they won better pay...but not better working conditions. Their concerns were made manifestly and horribly real in March 1911, when the 8th-10th floor facilities of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company caught fire, and 146 workers─mostly women─lost their lives.
