Noted black scholar and writer Andrew Sterling (Samuel L. Jackson) rents a New England summer house in an upscale white neighborhood, but the neighbors and Police Chief Tolliver (Dabney Coleman) assume he's a crook. After having his men open fire on the house, Tolliver realizes his mistake and recruits real thief Amos Odell (Nicolas Cage) to hold Andrew hostage in an effort to avoid the bad press.
