Large-scale war drama centers on reporter Dick Ennis (Robert Mitchum), who joins Allied forces when they land on Anzio beach in June, 1944. Along with two soldiers (Reni Santoni, Peter Falk), Ennis drives to Rome without altercation from the Nazis, but the Allied decision to avoid advancement to the city and concentrate on a coastal stronghold instead leads to four months of horrific fighting and 30,000 casualties.
