When a sponsor becomes displeased with his work, radio advertising scriptwriter Bill Grimes (William Haines), who is cheating on his wife, suddenly finds himself unemployed. While trying to find work amidst the backdrop of the Depression, Grimes has his life further complicated after his wife dies suddenly and a newspaper man tries to blame him for her death.
