While on the run, Army deserter Bart Laish (Sterling Hayden) happens upon the dead and dying of an ambushed patrol sent to escort a wagon train to Oregon. Assuming the C.O.'s identity, Laish meets up with the convoy as a means of reaching freedom, but winds up finding redemption through his leadership during the journey.
