In Victorian England, paranormal researcher Sir Hugo Cunningham (Robert Stephens) posited that everyone is watched by a supernatural entity--an "asphyx"--that comes for us at the moment of death. Sir Hugo sought to prove it out through luring his own asphyx through slow suicide, trapping it, and thereby gaining immortality...but the results would only deliver terror for himself and his colleagues.
