Singapore (1947)
Returned to the "Red Dot" after World War II's end, smuggler Matt Gordon (Fred MacMurray) was set on grabbing the pearls he'd stashed in a hotel wall as the Japanese attacked. The mission wouldn't merely be complicated by cops and criminals following his tracks, but his stunning discovery of Linda Grahame (Ava Gardner), the fiancée he'd thought a bombing casualty...and who was now amnesiac. John Brahm's effective noir romance co-stars Thomas Gomez, Richard Haydn, Roland Culver. 79 min. BW/Rtg: NR
On The Beach (1959)
In 1964, with the Northern Hemisphere rendered uninhabitable in the wake of nuclear war, an American sub commander (Gregory Peck) sets sail for a still-thriving Australia, in the faint hope of someday hearing an all-clear from the U.S. Meanwhile, a tense Australian populace begins to gird for the inevitability of the fallout drift. Stanley Kramer’s somber speculation, adapted from the Nevil Shute novel, co-stars Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, Anthony Perkins, Donna Anderson. 134 min. BW/Rtg: NR
Tam Lin (1970)
Michaela Cazaret (Ava Gardner) is a mature supernatural seductress who throws decadent parties to find younger lovers, then uses witchcraft to ensnare them and keep herself eternally beautiful. Based on Robert Burns' folk poem "The Ballad of Tam Lin," this offbeat, Scotland-set chiller (the sole directorial effort of Roddy McDowall) also stars Ian McShane, Stephanie Beacham, Cyril Cusack, and Joanna Lumley. 106 min. C/Rtg: PG-13
