A look at the colorful early lives and loves of the "Beat" writers is primarily set in Mexico City in 1951, where Joan Vollmer (Courtney Love) contemplates leaving husband William S. Burroughs (Kiefer Sutherland) while he pursues his homosexual urges. Paying Vollmer a visit at home are Allen Ginsburg (Ron Livingston) and UPI reporter Lucien Carr, but things gets complicated when Carr gets close to Vollmer, an ex-lover, and Ginsburg is drawn to Carr.
