Before Night Falls

"Basquiat" director Julian Schnabel brings another artist on the fringes of his society--gay Cuban poet Reinaldo Areanas--to the screen in this moving biodrama. Javier Bardem stars as Areanas, whose work was fueled by the fervor of Castro's revolution, but who faced persecution and jail for his sexuality before escaping to America in the 1980 Mariel exodus.
