Director Howard Hawks transposed Ernest Hemingway’s 1937 novel set in North America to wartime France for this classic adventure-romance. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (in her film debut) redefined screen chemistry as boat captain Harry Morgan and American wanderer Marie Browning, respectively, who cross paths in Martinique and get involved in the French Resistance.
