British Cinema: Classic 'B' Film Collection Volume 1
The Girl in the News (1941) is an atmospheric British thriller from Carol Reed ("The Third Man") about a butler who poisons his boss and frames the attending nurse for the deed. Margaret Lockwood, Barry K. Barnes star. Tossed out of college, a junk dealer's misguided son (Dermot Walsh) decides he'll get a better education working as a jewel thief in the crime drama "The Frightened Man" (1952). Barbara Murray, Charles Victor co-star. A gambler (George Baker) deep in debt must take a few more risks when his brother gets in trouble by spoiling his demanding girlfriend, in "Tread Softly Stranger" (1958). Diana Dors, Terence Morgan co-star. Set in 1911 London, the gangster drama "The Siege of Sidney Street" (1960) chronicles the infamous bloodbath that pitted the police against a gang of anarchists. Peter Wyngarde, Nicole Maurey star. Three-disc set also includes "Crimes at the Dark House" and "The Hooded Terror." 7 1/2 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono.
